Staff Accountant / Accounts Payable
Reports to: Senior Accountant / CFO

Position Overview
Shires Housing is seeking a detail-oriented Staff Accountant with a primary focus on Accounts Payable (AP) to join our finance team. This position is instrumental in ensuring accurate and timely processing of AP transactions, maintaining compliance with accounting standards, and supporting the organization’s financial operations. The role offers a flexible work environment, allowing for a combination of remote and in-office work.
Key Responsibilities
Accounts Payable
Review, verify, and process vendor invoices, ensuring proper approvals and supporting documentation. Maintain accurate and up-to-date vendor records, including payment terms and tax identification information.
Process electronic payments (ACH, wire transfers) and checks while adhering to payment schedules.
Reconcile vendor statements, investigate discrepancies, and resolve issues in a timely manner.
Ensure compliance with internal controls and organizational policies for AP transactions.
General Accounting Support
Assist with general ledger maintenance, including coding and posting AP transactions to the appropriate accounts.
Perform monthly reconciliations for AP-related accounts.
Support month-end and year-end close processes, including accruals and reporting.
Collaborate with the finance team on budget tracking and expense analysis.
Compliance & Reporting
Prepare and maintain accurate records for audit and regulatory purposes.
Assist with the preparation of Form 1099s and other annual reporting requirements.
Ensure adherence to accounting standards, organizational policies, and grant or contract requirements.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
Minimum of 2 years of experience in accounting, with a strong focus on accounts payable. Experience in non-profit or affordable housing accounting is a plus.
Skills and Competencies
Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Yardi (we will train) and Microsoft Excel.
Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy in financial processing.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a remote or hybrid environment.
Work Environment
Remote Flexibility: After a suitable probationary period, this position offers the ability to work remotely for part of the week, with some in-office requirements for meetings and other team activities.
Office Location: Shires Housing headquarters, Bennington County, Vermont.
