Battenkill North (Bennington)
Location: Safford Street & Pleasant Street
Units: 7 units in 2 historic converted firehouses
About: These 7 apartments are part of the 22-unit Battenkill North Limited Partnership, which spans seven buildings on four sites in 3 separate towns. 5 of the units comprise the old W.H. Bradford Hook and Ladder Fire House, which was originally built in 1893-94. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999 and maintains much of its historic character to this day. The other two units can be found in the iconic Stark Hose firehouse in downtown Bennington.
Benmont Ave.
Location: 137 & 139 Benmont Ave
Number of Units: 4
About: These two buildings comprise one of Shires’ 3 properties along Benmont Ave. These buildings were constructed between 1865 and 1875 as tenement houses for workers of the Holden-Leonard Mill Complex in Bennington. The neighborhood, known as the Holden-Leonard Workers Housing Historic District, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.
Bennington Historic
Location: Safford Street, Carrigan Lane, Pleasant Street, & School Street in Bennington
Number of Units: 26 units in 6 buildings scattered across Bennington
About: These buildings were all built before 1900 and were rehabbed by Shires Housing in 2016. Renovations included energy upgrades, siding replacement, refinishing of interiors, and installation of a pellet boiler system.
Cora B Whitney
Location: Gage Street in Downtown Bennington
Number of Units: 22 units in retrofitted former high school
About: The Cora B. Whitney building served as one of the town’s public schools until it was converted into senior housing in 1999. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features beautiful elements of Colonial Revival architecture. Today, it features several common areas, including a small library, kitchen, and seating. All units are accessible and residents enjoy the community feel of living there.

Location: 120-126 Benmont Ave & 501-507 South Street

About: This scattered-site development includes 12 apartments along Benmont Ave and 9 on South Street in Bennington.
Woodland Station (formerly Depot Street)
Location: 211-215 Depot Street

About: The seven units across two buildings were extensively rehabbed in 2020-2021 to make them safer, sustainable, and more comfortable to meet the needs of renters. The two historic buildings feature a fenced-in back yard, off-street parking, and beautiful covered porches.

About: This scattered-site development includes 9 units on South Street which includes a commercial unit which previously served as Shires Housing’s offices and is now occupied by Bennington College’s Restart Program. This community also includes 4 spacious 3-bedroom townhouses on School Street.

Location: 810 Gage Street

About: With only 2 units, this is our smallest property. These apartments are located right next door to our Cora B. Whitney senior housing.
North Street
Location: Just above the Four Corners at 136-142 North Street

About: This downtown building has 4 spacious apartments and two commercial units which currently house NeighborWorks of Western Vermont and JJ Young. Included in this property is a grassy gated courtyard accessible by an alleyway connecting North Street to Main Street.
Orchard Village
Location: Off of Orchard Road, north of Northside Drive in Bennington

About: Built in 1970, these 104 apartments were originally managed by Malone Property Management. The development was renamed Orchard Village from its previous name, Applegate Apartments, following a vote by residents in 2020. Shires Housing, in partnership with Evernorth (previously Housing Vermont, undertook an extensive energy rehab in 2017. Shires has worked hard to renovate the 104 units and provide resources such as a food shelf and community cooking and gardening programs. Still acting as owner and service provider, Shires brought in EP Management to handle day-to-day management of the community in 2022.

Willows Mobile Home Park
Location: Emma Street, just behind Pizza Hut off of Northside Drive

About: Shires’ only mobile home park, Willows offers affordable lot rent for mobile home owners. Shires is currently working with Efficiency Vermont to add 4 new zero-energy modular homes to the park that will be available for lease.
Bennington Locations
North Bennington and Shaftsbury Locations
With the recent addition of Lake Paran Village, Shires now manages a total of 29 apartments in North Bennington & Shaftsbury.
Lake Paran Village
Location: Off of Paran Road on the boarder of North Bennington and Shaftsbury
Number of Units: 22 one, two, and three-bedroom units
About: Located just south of Lake Paran, this development opened in the fall of 2020. With support from Paran Recreations and the Sage City Syndicate, this project added efficient and affordable housing in close proximity to North Bennington Village, increasing school enrollment, and supporting the economic development goals of the Town of Shaftsbury.
Battenkill North (Shaftsbury)
Location: 1930-1956 VT Route 67E
Number of Units: 7
About: These 7 apartments are part of the 22-unit Battenkill North Limited Partnership, which spans seven buildings on four sites in 3 separate towns. Shires completed the rehabilitation of the “brick row” apartments in Shaftsbury in the Spring of 2018. These iconic brick buildings were constructed in 1868 by the North Bennington Boot and Shoe Company for their workers. While the factory associated with this worker housing was destroyed by a fire in 1884, 5 of the 8 mill houses remain.

In Arlington, we manage 37 affordable apartments across 2 developments as well as 2 commercial spaces.
Arlington Village Center
Location: At the intersection of Historic Route 7A and East Arlington Road
Number of Units: 30 units across 13 buildings
About: This community features 17 affordable rental apartments in historic buildings for families as well as two commercial spaces and two newly constructed six-unit buildings that are designated for seniors and residents with disabilities.
Battenkill North (Arlington)
Location: 409 & 431 VT Rte 313 and 30 Battenkill Lane

About: These 8 apartments are part of the 22-unit Battenkill North Limited Partnership, which spans seven buildings on four sites in 3 separate towns. The large main building, 1-unit outbuilding with attached laundry facilities, and small detached cottage of the property, formerly referred to as Bentley Farm, underwent renovations in 2017-18.
