Shires Housing
Senior and Disability Homes
Shires Housing manages many units that are handicap accessible and/or designated for senior or disabled renters.
In Bennington, Shires manages the historic former Cora B. Whitney Elementary School which we converted to a senior residential community in 1999. We also manage two multi-family buildings at “Arlington Village Center,” a community of 17 mostly historic buildings, that are designated for renters 55 and older or that have a disability. While neither of these developments provide assisted living care, they are a good option if you’re looking to downsize, in need of handicap accessible housing, or if you want to live near folks of the same age/ability.
In addition to our units for seniors and disabled renters, Shires Housing oversees the Support And Services at Home (SASH) program that helps Medicare beneficiaries to live independently. Participants have access to a SASH Coordinator and Wellness Nurse to help transition support after a hospital or rehabilitation facility stay, provide education and coaching for chronic conditions and health maintenance, and coordinate care.
We have high demand for first-floor and handicap accessible units, so we recommend filling out an application. Simply check that you require a handicap accessible unit on page 4 of our application and/or write in if you are interested in living in a Senior-living Community.
